How To Apply Lessons From Wisconsin At Home

A lesson from Wisconsin’s battle over public unions is that it pays to take advantage of the general public’s short memory by front loading any controversial actions. This allows time for tempers to cool and the subject matter to lose priority in peoples’ lives.

The same lesson can be applied at home.

If you have bad news to share with a family member, it might be best to tell the person sooner rather than later for several reasons. First, the recipient of the information might respond worse if she learns about it from someone else. If you’re the one delivering the news, you can control the message. Second, given time and patience, the person might overcome some of the emotions generated by the information. Similar to letting a spouse sleep on an argument, the spouse might return to the conversation in a more receptive, forgiving mood. (We recommend not letting disagreements get in the way of expressing your love to your spouse, children, or other family member.) Third, similar to shooting the rapids, it’s sometimes better to go through something quickly, rather than fighting the current, letting it trickle out and poison a relationship overtime, not to mention exhausting you and inducing anxiety.
